Music at St. James

Saint James is in the midst of a year of broadening our musical experience and planning for the future. A broader musical program will allow us to engage people of all ages more successfully. A time of reflection and study will help us discern what the configuration of the music staff might be in 2012. A Music Task Force has been appointed by the rector to organize these efforts. Our chair is Marty Banghart, long time parishioner and Director of the deer Creek Chorale.

Over the course of 2011 we will make wider use of the breadth of music authorized for use in the Episcopal Church. Hymns from Wonder, Love and Praise have already been introduced and other offerings will be presented as we move through the year. Our two Choirs will lead us in this effort.

How can you participate?

Do you like to sing hymns? Consider joining The People's Choir. No ability to read music is required. People of all ages are welcome. If you can carry a tune and are willing to enjoy yourself, you should consider joining this choir. No lengthy rehearsals, but you will become an even better singer. Contact .

Do you sight-read music, have experience with SATB choral works and want to "sing a new song to the Lord"? Contact about The Chancel Choir. This group sings more challenging choral works and will be crafting a more expansive repertoire.

Come to the variety of events like hymn sings, concerts and alternative liturgies (at times other than the main Sunday services) at which we will learn about, and experience more kinds of music. There will be opportunities for the congregation to reflect on what they have learned, and liked, so that the task force, the vestry and the congregation can all contribute to the process.

Look for more young people as singers and musicians. Listen for visiting high school choirs and guest conductors who will lead our own two choirs. Experience good music in a variety of genres, performed well and as an heart-felt offering to God.

It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to your name, O Most High; to declare your steadfast love in the morning, and your faithfulness by night
