Usher/Liturgist Checklist

  1. Beginning Advent 2007 The Episcopal Church will use the Revised Common Lectionary. This is abbreviated RCL on the Lectionary Calendar page. Get readings from church office. Select hymns.
  2. Email hymn selection to the following: , , , , , , , , . Please email this hymn list one month prior to your assigned service.
  3. Arrive at church about 15 minutes early. About 8:40 am.
  4. Post hymn numbers on boards
  5. Be sure to put bulletins, W9 guide sheets, necessary hymnals at altar seats and choir pews.
  6. Hand out materials to parishioners. Ushers are the primary greeters for Saint James- a warm welcome goes a long way!
  7. Double check to see if other volunteers are present. This is a tricky one because sometimes the volunteer has found a sub but you do not know.
  8. During the passing of the peace go to the narthex (the little hall in the back of the church) and get the bread and wine on the white cloth. Approach the altar and wait for the priest to motion you forward. Take up the oblations and pass to the acolyte. Sometimes this oblation job is separately assigned, as in when we have a regular rota, and sometimes it is the liturgist/usher job as in when the youth group are in charge.
  9. After oblations have been passed to the acolyte, two ushers receive collection plates from acolyte, collect from the parishioners, and after the anthem or offertory hymn, (look for a signal from the priest or notice that the acolyte is waiting for you!) take the offering to the waiting acolyte.
  10. During communion, usher the parishioners to the rail. Try to keep an even flow of people so the priest is not waiting for people.
  11. Remember our responsibilities as we transition for the 9 o'clock service to the 10:15. Clean the various papers and ready the pews for the next service at the close of 9.
  12. Take down the hymns from 9 and put up the hymns for 10:15. Check the 10:15 bulletin for the hymn numbers.
  13. Many thanks for your good work today!
