Stewardship: About Tithing

You probably reached this page because you already have a deep personal commitment to God and His Son, Jesus Christ and are wondering if tithing is for you or are seeking help in how to go about tithing.

We at St. James Episcopal Church have been blessed with many parishioners who give willingly and unselfishly of their time, talent and money to further God's work, not only within our walls, but more importantly, in our community and the world outside. Several of our members tithe - some go beyond.

There are many pamphlets and tracts available in our tract racks in the Narthex and the Church Office on ways to achieve a goal of tithing. They usually embrace three important concepts:

  1. Giving as a priority - the idea of "First Fruits" - giving off the top rather than giving from what's left over,
  2. A commitment to "Proportionate Giving",
  3. Some type of disciplined plan to help you get to a tithe. The techniques will vary from ways to channel extra income to ways to lower expenses; most will suggest a gradual approach enabling you to adjust over time rather than do it all at once.

Rather than refer you to such pamphlets, a family from another parish shares its personal journey to tithing. Click here for their story: Seven Step Recipe for Grace through Tithing.
