Preface

This report is the result of three years of effort by the Long Range Planning Committee and the Vestry, and we thank them for their continuing effort to bring this to completion. We believe it contains lots of wisdom about who we are as a community of faith and where our heart lies regarding the future direction of ministry here.

Part I contains the result which of study of the report of PRECEPT, an organization which does demographic studies of communities for churches. This section also contains the insights from a number of focus group interviews done in the parish. Section C lists anticipated issues and needs derived from the above studies.

The Vestry and Long Range Planning Committee members in retreat studied these issues and needs and put flesh on them, as listed in Part II, titled "Future priorities and areas of focus." This part of the report was then sent to the Ministry Communities of Saint James, with a set of questions about how to use them in discussions regarding the Needs for new ministries for the next 3 to 5 years.

Part III, titled "Our Ministries", contains two parts. Firstly, Part A is a review of what we now do. It is intended to give a quick orientation to the mission of teach Ministry Community and how each works. Part B is the unedited response of each Ministry Community to the questions poised with the issues and needs. The entire text of each response is included in this report since much valuable information is contained therein.

Section C is a Summary of Action Steps, which has been extracted and listed without comment from the responses of the Ministry Communities in Part III-B.

It is intended that this report be used now by the Ministry Communities to look at new ideas for ministry to implement over the next 3 to 5 years. Part IV, Plan for the Future, lists the steps for implementation. The Vestry and Clergy stand ready to assist the Communities in any way possible as they seek to discern how to be most faithful in their work.

This report in its entirety is also a valuable aid in developing lay leadership for the Communities and for the Vestry, as it brings on new members each year.

Now that Saint James will be in a transition of clergy leadership, this report could also be a source of information to use in profiling the congregation for the search and for finding the right leadership to lead us into an exciting future.
