Beloved, Awaken to Christ
"Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers;"
As many of you know, I have just returned from an 8-day silent retreat.
Some asked, "What do you do on a silent retreat?"
The obvious answer is that you are silent.
But, I think, the truer answer is that you are learning to wake-up to the Christ within.
I spent every morning on retreat with a cup of coffee and the sunrise.
As I watched the sun move from a bare illumination at the horizon to a full-blown ball of fire in the morning sky, I let its movement speak to my heart.
As tendrils of warm sunlight begin to illuminate the earth so too does prayer and liturgy, scripture and silence wake up the spirit to the gifts that Christ is longing to give.
In our society, the temptation to keep moving often keeps us from stopping long enough to notice that we are sleepwalking.
There are many things that keep us asleep.
Distractions and busy-ness, feelings of inadequacy and anxiety, just to name a few.
What do these things have to do with the beloved children of God?
From the point of view of the sunrise-nothing!
The sun returns and gives its light to all the earth, to the anxious and serene and all those in between.
God's grace is like that, isn't it?
Moving through our world like sunlight. It is so present that we don't even see it.
So, my dear ones, wake up and smell the coffee, and watch the sunrise,
And be warmed by the graces God is giving you each day.
