You desire truth
In the inward being;
Therefore
Teach me wisdom
In my secret heart.
Psalm 51
Discernment is the art of separating one thing from another. Discernment allows us to take the outside information and listen to its inside significance. With the inspiration of the Holy Spirit we see into the "heart of the matter."
Discernment is not merely being wise, although that may be desirable; it is about being attentive to the Holy Spirit. Discernment requires courage and detachment from preconceived ideas and agendas.
And discernment becomes another way of entering community because as we share the beginnings of insight we will experience the reflections of a discerning community as a blossoming out of revelation.
