The first book of the New Testament, the Gospel According to Matthew is attributed to the apostle Matthew. Though he may not have actually authored the Gospel, it is generally accepted that Matthew’s "sayings of Jesus" are incorporated into the book.
Symbol: Matthew, like John, has two symbols, one as apostle and one as evangelist. The symbol for Matthew as evangelist is a winged man because in his Gospel, he emphasizes the humanity of Christ.
