With his brother John, James left his home and fishing trade in obedience to the call of Christ. With Peter and John, he was part of a privileged group of apostles who were closest to Jesus and whom Jesus chose to witness the Transfiguration, the raising of Jarius’ daughter, and the agony in the garden at Gethsemane. James is sometimes called James the Greater to distinguish him from the other James (the Less) who was also among the Twelve.
Symbol: Three scallop shells representing James’ missionary trips.
