An acolyte is "one who serves at the altar", and it is through this service we learn how to address God in all aspects of our lives. As we carry the cross and torches and assist in the tasks of the communion service, we discover how to carry God's love into the world and how to love and serve each other.
Though we don't let everyone in on the secret, serving is fun!
By participating in this way we are an important part of the drama that is the liturgry. As servers, we sit behind the altar rail and enjoy the service up close and personal from a unique vantage point.
Processing beautifully, receiving offerings, assisting in communion, tending candles, flying bannners and laughing at jokes in the sermon are all part of our job. Our acolytes are men and women, boys and girls of all ages. We are always looking for cheerful people to join us, and welcome you to contact Laura Green, Acolyte Master, with your inquiries.
To serve with gladness and singleness of thought is our mission, and in doing so we find a graceful, natural and joyful way to contribute our time and talents to the St. James community. We hope you will join us!
